Garden with stream-inspired drainage

Project Overview

This garden was designed by North Leeds Garden Design to address the unique challenges of a site prone to mild flooding due to substantial clay deposits. Much of the garden had previously been unusable, with water pooling after heavy rain. Our solution centred on an integrated water management system that not only resolved the drainage issues but also enhanced the natural character of the space.

The upper section of the garden is finished with sawn sandstone, providing a clean and elegant surface. Lower down, beneath the graceful canopy of a willow tree, we created an oval seating area for quiet reflection. Stepping stones weave through the bog garden, inviting exploration and offering year-round enjoyment of this carefully managed wetland environment.

Creative Water Management Solution

Water from the house gutters is channelled into a natural pool, creating a calm focal point. When the pool reaches capacity, the overflow is directed down the garden via a stream-like feature, where it is distributed through a network of underground land drains. These pipes feed the excess water into a purpose-built bog garden, transforming a formerly problematic area into an attractive and ecologically rich landscape. This system significantly reduces the client’s flooding issues while adding visual interest.
